Consider Everything!

July 26th, 2011 3 comments

Who doesn’t need a little bathroom humor in their life?

I know I do. Take a break from your renovations and take a look at these “wonders” of design.

Who said that a toilet has to cost a lot of money? Here is one way to save money and be environmentally friendly (I think) at the same time.

Looking to bring your bathroom outside? But don’t want to miss the comforts? Here is an alternative…

If you live in a closet and must put a bathroom in it, at least try facing it away from the wall.

The soap is on the other side. . .

It’s good to be the king! I would suggest putting a TV on the wall facing the toilet.

I hope these, at least, got a giggle out of you. Now back to work! You have a bathroom to finish and you don’t want to end up on my list of “worst bathrooms”!

For a complete list of these design wonders, visit this website.

The Many Uses of Glass Tile

July 15th, 2011 5 comments

You have finished your remodeling project and now you have left over tile. What to do? One option is to throw it in the garage and forget about it until you move and have to throw it out or sell it. Or you could get creative and bring that left over tile into the rest of your home to use as accents for other things. Let’s take a look at some ideas!

Bathroom

- Backsplash: Use leftover tile to create a backsplash or a border around your vanity or toilet.

- Bathtubs: If you have a lot of tile left over you can use that to create a colorful side to your bathtub or Jacuzzi. Not enough for a whole side? Create a decorative trim to match your walls or floors.

- Shower walls: Add tile to your shower wall to tie in the colors in the bathroom.

- Vanity countertop: If you decided not to replace your existing vanity, but still not happy with what it looks like, why not create a countertop made of tile. It is easy to do and will last you a life time!

- Bathroom Waterfall: Purchase a simple waterfall mechanism at your local hardware store and make it shine by adding glass tile to match your bathroom. With a little bit of work this feature can look like you spent a lot of money on accenting your bathroom!

- Trays: At the dollar store buy a plastic tray and attach tile to it. This tray can be used to hold all your accessories: hair brush, razor, lotions, and perfumes.

- Soap, toothbrush holders: Buy the cheapest plastic or ceramic set you can find and add beautiful glass tile to it. The work is easy and the effect is priceless! The whole set will look like it was custom made to match your bathroom.

Outside the Bathroom

If you installed some tile in the kitchen (maybe a backsplash), or anywhere in your home, you may want to bring in left over tile as accents as well. Here are some ideas.

- Coasters: 4×4 tile or mosaic tile will do the trick. Attach the tile to a piece of wood or rubber backing, seal it and you got a coaster! Make the square bigger and you have a great matching coaster for all your hot pots and pans.

- Jars, Vases, Candle Holders: Mosaic tile will work best for these projects. Glue some little squares on mason jars, candle holders and vases and you have some very unique items that match everything else in your home.

- Fireplaces: Add a glass tile border to your fire place to bring it into the 21st century.

- Table Top: Create a beautiful table top for crafts or a kid’s art table using glass tile. If you don’t like the texture put a piece of glass over it (can be cut and finished at your local hardware store for very little money).

- Jewelry: Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings and even flip flops can be made to look very chic and modern by attaching small pieces of mosaic tile to them.

You can create a very unique work of art and express your creativity in any of these projects. Your imagination is the inspiration and the sky is the limit when it comes to working with glass tile.
I am sure I did not cover even half of possibilities for glass tile.

If you have any ideas, tips or suggestions I would love to hear from you. Leave a comment or email me at kyuh@landswarehouse.com and who knows your idea might just make an appearance on my next blog (I promise to give you credit).

Beginner’s Guide to Designing Your Bathroom

July 6th, 2011 1 comment

So, you are looking at your bathroom yet again and thinking “this needs to change”! But where do you begin? What style should you select? What if things don’t match and everything just looks bad? Unless you are a professional designer chances are you are scared of taking on this project and jumping in blindfolded. I hope the list below will help you gather your thoughts and give you some ideas on where and how to begin the bathroom remodel you so badly want.

Make an appointment to visit a bathroom showroom.

Order catalogues, magazines, brochures and browse the thousands of pictures available online.

Check out bathroom displays to see various styles of installed fixtures.

Go to open houses in your area to look at their bathrooms (chances are they remodeled one or two trying to sell the house).

Stop by your local three to five star restaurant and/or hotel and see if you find inspiration in what they have done.

Decide on a theme of your bathroom. Are you looking for a timeless traditional look that will last you for years to come? Antique bathroom inspired by royal families? Or an ultra modern, one of a kind bathroom? Still not sure? (Don’t worry I’ll explore different styles in future blogs)
Take a look at your bathroom. What are you keeping? What has to go? Make a list of items that you will not part with and try to incorporate them into your design.
MAKE A PLAN! Everything from start to finish.
Remember: A full bathroom would consist of: 1) a sink 2) a toilet 3) a shower 4) a bath tub. Often the shower and bath tub are combined, but sometimes there is a separate tub and separate shower.

A 3/4 Bathroom consists of sink, toilet and stand up shower with no bath tub.

A 1/2 Bathroom consists of a sink and toilet.

1/4 bath just has a sink.

So your list should include at least the minimums that need to go into the room, but it would be good to have all the accessories together as well. Soap dispencer? Towel Rack? Robe hook? Make sure you have all the elements in order before  starting. It could be very difficult to find a towel rack in polished chrome!

Make all your purchases way in advance. Do not even think about hiring a contractor until you have all your items in your house. You do not know what can happen between the time you order the item and the time it is safely in your house.  Delays in manufacturing, breaking in transit, or simply the wrong thing shipped could delay your project and cost you a lot of money if you already booked a contractor.

Don’t forget: It could take a long time (at least a week) for your bathroom to be completely redone once you have all the items in order. Have a plan B for using a restroom while it is under construction (maybe remodeling ALL the bathrooms at once may not be such a great idea, unless you don’t yet live in the house).

Most of all, make it yours, unique, original, something that screams your personality and your taste, simply because you are the one who has to look at it every day. Good Luck and Have Fun!
